Peter Hellinckx

About

Peter Hellinckx is a professor leading M4S (Modelling for Sustainability), an AI research team at the University of Antwerp in the faculty of applied engineering focusing on data driven sustainable solutions within an economic reality. He obtained his Master in Computer Science and his Ph.D. in Science both from the University of Antwerp in 2002 and 2008 respectively. His master thesis acted on the interpretation of 2D sketches. His Ph.D. was titled "The evolution towards Desktop Grid systems, problems and solutions". After his PhD Peter Joined the TERA-Labs research team in the applied engineering department at Karel de Grote University college where the core of his research was focusing on distributed embedded systems and Real time constraints. During the integration of the engineering department of the University of Antwerp the research team merged into the CoSys-Lab research team where his research evolved more in the direction of Cyber Physical Systems and Internet of Things. In these Years Peter Started the Post graguate in Internet of Things. During the fusion of imec and iminds Peter joined the IDLab-Antwerp research team where he build an expertise center around data driven control for process control, smart buildings, mobility and logistics. Here he became the lead the entire AI team. Just recently in 2022 he decided to exit imec and use his data driven control expertise to support sustainable solutions in an economic reality. A new research team called M4S (Modeling for Sustainability) was born. Currently Peter is the head of the department of Electronics-ICT and leading the M4S research team. He currently supervises 12 PhD’s, 2 post-docs and a business developer in the field of data driven control. He is currently teaching the course 1-Informatics to all applied engineering students, the 3-year bachelor course Artificial Intelligence, the master course Computer Graphics and he is the coordinator of the bachelor and master thesis’s in his department. Peter is co-founder of the companies Hysopt, Hi10, Digitrans and Rollo. His current research focuses on Distributed Artificial Intelligence for sustainable solutions in IoT and Cyber Physical Systems with as main application domains: construction, climate change, autonomous driving/shipping, logistics, mobility, Industry 4.0 and smart cities. In this field, he is a reviewer in many scientific project evaluation commissions, both on a national and an international level. He is a guest editor of multiple journals acting on these topics.
